Groundhog Day

Published under Climate Change, Weather

The annual ritual of Punxsutawney Phil forecasting the end of spring has come and gone again. And he forecasted an early end to spring. Woohoo! Of course, he forgot that it is actually the coldest it’s been for much of the United States. This airmass will move off to the east, bringing in new weather, but it’s unlikely to be much warmer. So it’s likely to be cold for at least for the Northeast US until at least March. Of course, I live in Tucson, so I’m not too worried. It was very cold - for Tucson - a few weeks back, but otherwise the weather has been good. And the nice weather is a great reason to live in Tucson.

There’s also rumors of Phil warning of global warming. It’s a fun little piece, which I assume to be mostly humorous.

“In the first 75 years of the 20th century, Phil cast no shadow only four times. But in just the last 25 years of the century, Phil cast no shadow fully eight times, alerting us that winter was coming to an early end, a six fold increase!” – Doug Inkley, wildlife biologist with the US National Wildlife Federation told Newswise

The comments (3 as of the time of writing) that are equally humorous… but for a different reason.
