CO2 Reaches 650,000 Year High

Published under Climate Change

In news that makes you go “duh”, Greenhouse gases hit new high.

This is really no surprise. If the annually-averaged net sources of carbon dioxide are greater than the annually-averaged net sinks, then the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide will increase. This piece seems to just be another article that was written because it was about global warming. If there is a person out there that doesn’t understand that CO2 levels in the atmosphere are increasing, then a short little article that says “hey, CO2 levels are increasing” isn’t going to do anything. I’m all for popular journalism to write about global warming; it’s a serious topic. But make sure that each article is worth something, because by writing a story on global warming whenever you have a deadline that offers no new information just pollutes the information stream to the public.

I was looking through Real Climate this weekend, and found this great article: How much CO2 emission is too much?. Summarizing the article: We need to start doing something about carbon emissions now, because of the time lag effect they have in the atmosphere.

And since I seem to be in a linking mood, rather than typing mood, here’s Anthropogenic and natural CO2 emission sources in an arid urban environment. Interesting little paper on the contributions of humans to carbon dioxide levels in an arid city (Phoenix). Since humans are expected to infiltrate the arid and semi-arid regions to a greater extent in the future, this effect may become important.
