What’s Your Carbon Footprint?

Published under Climate Change

From Lifecycle Carbon Footprint Monitor:

my carbon emissions

As can be seen, my total Co2 equivalent is much less than the typical American. Woohoo! However, it is still more than the World average by 40%. Booo!

My transportation emissions are near zero. I drive about 5 miles per week, and I allocated a vacation drive of 800 miles for this exercise since that’s approximately what I’ve done for the last 2 years. My vehicle miles are so low because my apartment is close to work and I can walk. I am lucky that the weather (almost) always cooperates, such that the walk is pleasant.

My housing emissions are over twice the world average. I blame that on me not knowing what my electricity costs - it’s included in the rent. I lowered it from the US average, but I don’t know exactly what it should be. I generally don’t have any lights on in the house. I have the air conditioning set at 80F during the summer and don’t use heat during the winter. It does get a little cold at night, if you were wondering. I use a blanket.

I’m not sure why my food emissions are so high. I don’t actually eat that much, and I try to buy local. I think it’s a little high because I allocated $7 per week on going out to eat. That’s once per week at Chipotle (mmm).

I use hardly any goods or services, so the low emissions there are not surprising.

What did surprise me is that the amount of CO2 I emit (mostly indirectly) is much less than CFCs in equivalent CO2 per year. I think that’s again due to my high housing emissions. If I recall correctly, air conditioning still uses CFCs and HCFCs as coolants.

So take the quiz, and see if you’re above or below average. Just speculation, but if you’re concerned enough to be taking the quiz, you’re probably already below the US average!

Don’t have time to take the quiz right now, but I have to drive 15 miles to work each way, so I have a feeling it’s not going to be good.
