Hay Springs Surface Station

Published under Climate Change, Land Use

hay_springs_inset.jpgIn his latest post on how not to measure temperature, Anthony Watts profiles the Hay Springs surface stations. He actually provides photos of two COOP stations in Hay Springs, but it appears only one is included in the USHCN. The ‘better’ sited of the two is included in the USHCN. There is some interesting things about this station when compared to its surrounding stations.

Using the same technique that I’ve previously used, I compare the temperature at Hay Springs (COOP ID: 253715) with the 10 closest surrounding stations. I find the 10 closest stations via a brute force method, using the latitude and longitude of each station to calculate the great circle distance between them. The temperature of the 10 stations are then averaged and subtracted from the Hay Springs temperature.

Fishing for Station Moves: Diversion Dam, WY

Published under Climate Change, Land Use

colorado_river_inset.jpgI have previously shown that the adjustments for station moves does not work properly. See blog posts related to the stations at Lampasas, TX, Miami, AZ, and Saguache, CO. This post will show that affects recorded in the station history, but unrelated to station location, also are uncorrected in the USHCN FILNET data. This station was found after 3 iterations of looking at random stations. The first two stations showed nothing interesting related to station moves [the methodology is described in the Saguache post linked above].

Crater Lake Surface Station Looks Okay

Published under Climate Change, Land Use

Steven Mosher asks:

I have an interesting case for you to look at with your method.

in H2001 Hansen mentions that Crater Lake station was deleted in it’s entirety. I spent a couple days looking at it and the surrounding stations and nothing struck me as being odd about this station. This was an utterly subjective assesment so it might be interested to see what you method suggests.

I’ve been extremely busy lately, so I decided to reply in a post so that it looks like I’m not abandoning the blog.

Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right… Unfortunately

Published under Climate Change, Land Use

Or: If there was any doubt I was stupid, there isn’t anymore.
Or: Where’s the bitch and moan department?
Or: Lack of brain foils scarecrow.
Or: Suggestions for the USHCN that would make it more difficult for them, but easier for me - and that’s all I care about right now.

Any other suggestions for alternative titles for this post?

For whatever reason, I was looking at the station at Troy Lock and Dam. Notice the three points way to the left of the rest? That’s part one of the problem.
